The Root Palm
This colorful stereograph image is one of 200 stereographs we will be digitizing in the coming months, as a part of a mini-grant we recently received.
In beginning to test some logistics of this digitization project, we found that these palm trees were difficult to correctly identify.
The title of the image “The Root Palm” is not as helpful as one would hope. The term “root palm” is not in the Library of Congress Subject Headings and a simple Google search did not yield any additional results.
Can you identify this plant? Does it have a more commonly used name– or do you know its scientific name?
We think it may be a “walking palm” but our initial research has been inconclusive.
Were palm trees like these common in the Canal Zone? Can you identify the area where this photo was taken?
If you have any information that could help us identify the plants in this stereograph image, please share your knowledge with us in the comments section!
