Old Panama…I have no idea where this bridge is, or if it is still standing. Anyone???
La puenta (the bridge) is on the ancient road Camino del Rey (road of the King) near Panama Viejo, Panama City. The significance of the photograph is the bridge is believed to be the first bridge in the Americas built by the Spaniards without any center supports except for the compression of the bricks used in the archway to build it.. The bridge was just wide enough to accommodate the width of a horse drawn carriage of the day.
I have been told “this bridge proves that there were no earth quacks in this area”. Meaning goood place to build a CANAL.
I’ve heard the bridge fell down during fire works display in 2000.
