Photograph taken in the ‘Casco Viejo’, (the old section of the new city of Panama) in front of the Hotel Central on the right with the multiple flag poles.
Edward’s right — the photo was taken in Cathedral Plaza, in the old Casco Viejo. The building with the flagpoles is however the Grand Hotel (built 1874). The Hotel Central, presently being rebuilt but maintaining the original façade, is behind the trees on the left of the photo.
The sign on the front of the Grand Hotel is hard to read, but it says “Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interoceanique”, since the building was brought by the French company to be its.headquarters in Panama. Which would indicate that the photo was taken sometime in the 1880s. It was later the offices of the Isthmian Canal Commission, before the ICC moved to a new Administration Building in the Canal Zone.
The building is presently the Museo del Canal Interoceanico, and to get an idea what it looked like over the years, one can visit their website http://www.museodelcanal.com, and click “history of the museum”.
Trolley tracks ran from Pres. Remon race track to La Boca ferry in 30s.
